Konstantin Stanislavski, born in Moscow in 1863, was not just an actor or a director. He was a revolutionary thinker who asked a simple but radical question: What if acting were not about pretending but about truth? In response, he developed the Stanislavski Method, offering audiences a new standard of honesty in performance.
Russian theater has often been underestimated globally, yet its approach is simple and profound, expressed Aly Deyde, Mauritanian actor with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. In his work as an acting coach, he uses notes from his time in Russia to draw connections for his own actors. His goal is to craft stories that draw from his internship experience at GITIS—the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts, a world-renowned theater school—where he collaborated with theater professionals from across the Global South.Cinema is a crucial tool for the Global South to assert control over its own narratives, ensuring genuine representation and human voices, said Judi Nwokedi, executive producer at Free Women Films in South Africa, who attended the Moscow International Film Festival in 2024 and conferences with BRICS countries on film.Discover more insights from our outstanding guest on the Russian Essence podcast, proudly brought to you by Sputnik Africa. You can find our episodes on the website as well as on Telegram.► Check out all the episodes of the Russian Essence Podcast.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Podcast Addict and Afripods.

"I think Russian theater has been underestimated by the world [...] so that kept the Russian method under the shadow. The approach is very, very simple: acting is not to act. This is something that I really loved. As an actor, I am not showing you that I am acting; I am actually leaving the character throughout the given circumstances," explained the African actor.
In his work as an acting coach, he uses notes from his time in Russia to draw connections for his own actors. His goal is to craft stories that draw from his internship experience at GITIS—the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts, a world-renowned theater school—where he collaborated with theater professionals from across the Global South.
Cinema is a crucial tool for the Global South to assert control over its own narratives, ensuring genuine representation and human voices, said Judi Nwokedi, executive producer at Free Women Films in South Africa, who attended the Moscow International Film Festival in 2024 and conferences with BRICS countries on film.
"I firmly believe that film allows us to reclaim our narrative sovereignty. [...] it allows us to provide authentic human voices and representation, [which] is not a luxury. It's a defensive strategy against manipulation and destruction of who we are, and so film is a counterbalance; it is a visual truth," she expressed.
