US Support for Nigeria Against Terrorism? Washington Seeks to Keep African Countries in 'Military Dependence:' Analyst
The US wants to maintain its influence in West Africa, geostrategist Charly Kengne told Sputnik Africa, following the announcement of American arms deliveries to Nigeria:
“They want to preserve a certain dependence of African forces on American expertise as well as on American armaments.
Washington also aims to counter ‘Russian and Chinese competition,’ while Nigeria remains one of its oil suppliers and benefits from the African Growth and Opportunity Act, the expert recalled.
The same assessment was shared by Armel Sango, an expert on integration and development issues, who believes the fight against terrorism is not the sole American motivation:
“There is a growing rise of actors working toward de-dollarization. There is also this desire to steer the extraction, exploitation, and commercialization of oil. We have seen how they intervened in Venezuela and in other oil-producing countries,” he explained to Sputnik Africa.
