This episode explores Rwanda's landmark arbitration case against the UK and parallel demands for ethical cultural representation, examining Africa's proactive assertion of sovereignty in changing global power dynamics.
Rwanda’s decision to initiate formal arbitration proceedings against the United Kingdom over the cancelled asylum agreement is a case study in Africa’s post-colonial realignment. This signals a strategic rejection of a neocolonial logic that has long allowed the West to treat agreements as optional when inconvenient. Sputnik Africa engaged Dr. Roslyn Fuller, director of the Solonian Democracy Institute, Ireland, to discuss this fascinating and precedent-setting moment. This episode also features the conversation between Kozmo Miller, a media producer and voice-over talent, and Sputnik Africa correspondent, as he points out the West’s long history of borrowing, appropriating, and misusing African culture—taking the vibrancy, the aesthetics, the sounds, and the stories, while too often divorcing them from their meaning, their context, and their source.Discover more insights from our outstanding guests on the Pan-African Frequency podcast, proudly brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Pocket Casts, Afripods, and Podcast Addict► Check out all the episodes of Pan-African Frequency

Broken Promises, Stolen Culture: Africa’s Legal & Cultural Challenge with Colonial-Era Dynamics
The truth is that this agreement was never not politically controversial in the UK. It was always politically controversial. It was very unpopular. The opposition parties very much opposed it from the beginning. It went actually through several court decisions as people challenged whether or not it was legal. So there was never a time when it wasn't very politically controversial [....] I think Rwanda is playing things very much by the book by initiating arbitration [...] I think that generally Western countries, if something is politically important to the party and to the governing party, then they will go ahead and make that decision, even if they do have to pay compensation for the sake of doing so,” the expert noted.
This episode also features the conversation between Kozmo Miller, a media producer and voice-over talent, and Sputnik Africa correspondent, as he points out the West’s long history of borrowing, appropriating, and misusing African culture—taking the vibrancy, the aesthetics, the sounds, and the stories, while too often divorcing them from their meaning, their context, and their source.
"It is very important to understand the origins of something and respect its cultural value. Even if it is necessary to use it, it is necessary to go to the origin. In this way, one can clearly understand what the origins of that culture are and where it comes from," Miller said.
