Uganda to Withdraw Its Troops From Somalia 19 Years After Entering the Country: Commander-in-Chief

Uganda intends to pull out the troops in the near future, which make up a significant part of the African Union's peacekeeping contingent in the country, Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People's Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said.

Last July, Kainerugaba called on Ugandan authorities to completely withdraw their contingent from Somalia, which has been in the country since 2007 as part of the African Union mission.

At the time, the Ugandan commander-in-chief claimed that the US was engaged in secret negotiations with representatives of the al-Shabaab* group.

ℹ The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia is a peacekeeping operation launched in 2025 to replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, which ended in December 2024. The mission has 11,000 troops, including:

4,500 from Uganda,

2,500 from Ethiopia,

1,500 from Djibouti,

1,400 from Kenya,

1,100 from Egypt.
