Africa’s Top 10 Military Powers Ranked by Global Firepower 2026

Egypt firmly maintains its position as Africa's leading military power according to the 2026 edition of the Global Firepower (GFP) ranking, with a power index of 0.3651 and a global ranking of 19th out of 145 countries analyzed.

Algeria remains second on the continent (27th globally), followed by:

Nigeria (33rd globally)

South Africa (40th)

Ethiopia (47th)

Morocco (56th)

Angola (59th)

DRC (64th)

Sudan (66th)

Tunisia (79th), completing the African Top 10.

This year, 14 African countries have risen in the global rankings (including Ethiopia, Morocco, DRC, Sudan, and Tunisia), 17 have fallen, and 7 have remained stable.

The GFP power index is calculated using more than 60 indicators, including personnel, armaments, budget, logistics, natural resources, and geography. A lower score indicates higher perceived military power.
