Second Major Blackout in Weeks Hits Nigeria
The national power grid suffered another nationwide outage on Friday, the first of 2026. A nearly identical incident had already plunged the country into darkness in late December 2025.
The system-wide disturbance caused a total outage of Nigeria’s national grid at about 12:40 pm on Friday, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said.
Preliminary reports indicate the collapse was triggered by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines and the disconnection of some grid-connected power generation units. Grid restoration began around 1:15 pm, following established recovery procedures.
NISO said investigations into the cause of the disturbance are ongoing, adding that full stabilization of the grid remains a top priority.
The grid disruptions are believed to have been caused by a series of technical failures, poor maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in electricity generation capacity, according to local media.
