South Africa's ICJ Case Against Israel is Part of Broader Accountability Path: Palestinian Official

There is a "special relationship" between Palestine and South Africa due to the nations' shared histories of struggle, Minister Ahmed Assaf, General Supervisor of Palestinian Official Media, told Sputnik.

Assaf praised Pretoria's solidarity, particularly its landmark case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, as contributing to Palestine's long-term strategy of leveraging international law since gaining UN observer status in 2012.

This status allows Palestine to be treated as a "legal entity," enabling cases to be filed against Israel, the official explained.

He noted important legal recognitions, including a 2015 UN Security Council resolution condemning settlements and defining Israeli actions in Gaza as "crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide."

Despite these legal steps, little has changed on the ground, with Israel continuing its occupation, Assaf conceded. However, he pointed to daily diplomatic achievements, including new countries recognizing Palestine and accession to international bodies.

"We will not despair, and we will persevere," he asserted. "We will continue to build these bridges with all countries of the world until justice is achieved for the Palestinian people."
