US Eyes Greenland's Mineral Resources as It is 'Protecting' the Island, VP Vance Says

"We want to share in the wealth of this beautiful landmass with a lot of minerals and a lot of resources that fundamentally we're protecting," JD Vance told US media.

Vance's statement marks a shift from President Trump's previous rejection of the notion that Greenland's importance for Washington is resource-based.

On Wednesday, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump clarified he could not foresee a war with NATO ally Denmark over Greenland, an autonomous territory within the kingdom.

A long-term—or "forever"—deal for the island is being discussed, with a basis for an agreement developed following talks with NATO officials, he stated.

Both Danish and Greenlandic authorities have repeatedly warned the US to respect their territorial integrity, pushing back against Trump suggestions that the island should become part of the US.
