Algeria Fined $100,000, Two Players Suspended After AfCON Quarterfinal Incidents, Says Federation
These sanctions were decided following incidents that occurred during the match against Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations on January 10, Algeria's national football federation (FAF) announced.
Defender Rafik Belghali received a four-match suspension, two of which are conditional and will only be enforced if he commits another offense, while goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, said FAF.
Both sanctions will apply to 2027 AfCON qualifying match.
The financial penalties were imposed for several violations:
🟠$50,000 for offensive gestures by supporters (displaying banknotes) directed at match officials;
🟠$25,000 for the inappropriate behavior of some players and officials after the match;
🟠$5,000 for team misconduct (five yellow cards);
🟠$10,000 for security breaches, as fans attempted to break through barriers;
🟠$5,000 for the use of flares by supporters;
🟠$5,000 for objects thrown by supporters.
The FAF has immediately initiated the appeals procedure to contest these sanctions, the federation said.
