Europe 'Not at War With Russia,' Cannot Seize Its Money, Belgian PM Claims

"You cannot just take somebody's money, [...] that is an act of war, we should not underestimate it, it has never happen in history," Bart de Wever said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Even during the Second World War, immobilized money was never confiscated, the prime minster noted, adding that the issue of frozen Russian assets will be raised at negotiations on Ukraine.

Last year, the EC zealously pushed EU states to raid frozen Russian sovereign assets under the guise of a “loan” to Ukraine, repayable only if Moscow pays reparations. Yet, no consensus was reached due to concerns over legal and financial risks.

Moscow had repeatedly warned that confiscating its assets—around €300 billion—would provoke severe consequences, with President Putin calling the idea outright “theft” and warning it could undermine the foundations of the global financial system.
