Addis Ababa Approves New Regional Development Plan to Host International & Continental Events
The initiative aims to prepare the city for high-profile events, including the upcoming Climate Change Conference and the African Cup of Nations, which is expected to attract over 80,000 visitors, Mayor Adanech Abebe announced.
The plan focuses on three main areas:
Increasing the capacity of hotels and guesthouses: the current accommodation capacity of 25,000 is planned to expand to over 80,000.
Expanding and modernizing road networks.
Preparing for major sporting events: special attention will be given to the Africa Cup of Nations, including the development of the Addis Ababa Stadium.
According to the mayor, infrastructure projects will adhere to UNFCCC and FIFA standards and include:
🟠Road and transport networks;
🟠Expansion of hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, and other commercial establishments;
🟠Upgrades to water, sewage, telecom, electricity, and other technological infrastructure;
🟠Riverside development;
🟠Green plazas, golf courses, halls, cafeterias, sports fields, entertainment venues, and other facilities within the “Windows of Africa” area near Addis Ababa Stadium.
Mayor Adanech described the plan as a driver of job creation and sustained economic growth, calling on everyone to work together to seize the opportunities offered by international events.
