The US imposition of tariffs on European allies over Greenland exposes deep fractures in Western unity. We explore a dual vision for Africa’s response: building self-reliance through pan-African trade and BRICS partnerships, while urgently addressing the continent's defensive vulnerability in an age of renewed militarism.
In a fascinating conversation with Martin Zharare, the executive director of Citizens Against Economic Sanctions, Zimbabwe, on the core indicators of an economic growth model that is truly pro-African, he articulated a proactive blueprint for economic sovereignty in 2026. His focus rests on accelerating the African Continental Free Trade Area, halting the export of raw materials in favor of local processing, and decisively leveraging continental resources. Critically, he frames partnerships within BRICS not merely as trade alternatives, but as vital mechanisms to dismantle financial dependencies, particularly on the US dollar and institutions like the IMF.In the same light, Professor Metjie Makgoba, a political Analyst, from the University of Limpopo, South Africa discussed with Sputnik Africa, the unfolding fractures of the Transatlantic Alliance, as the US government pledged to impose 10% tariffs on eight European countries, who are opposing the US threats to takeover Greenland. Examining recent aggressive postures by the US, he noted that the unfolding events present opportunities for BRICS and other smaller entities to empower themselves and to set their own global agenda.Tune in to listen to the full conversation with our guests on the Pan African Frequency podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Pocket Casts, Afripods, and Podcast Addict► Check out all the episodes of Pan-African Frequency

Imperative of African Strategic Autonomy Amid Western Discord and Multipolarity
Critically, he frames partnerships within BRICS not merely as trade alternatives, but as vital mechanisms to dismantle financial dependencies, particularly on the US dollar and institutions like the IMF.
“Wherever there is a problem, there are also opportunities. You can see that the American president, Donald Trump, and his administration has been really hitting Africa hard on the tariffs [...] When this is happening, it is a door that is opening for African countries to make sure that we start to trade among ourselves [...] My thinking and my wish, for Africa, is they will join BRICS, they will stop to have dependence on the US dollar, because the US dollar is the one that is giving us so many problems in Africa because we are depending on it, and they're controlling us. Because we are using their currency, and we are using their monetary system, their payment system, SWIFT and everything [....] we should not always be looking at the IMF to resource us. We should not always be looking at these Bretton wood institutions to finance our development.,” Zharare highlighted
In the same light, Professor Metjie Makgoba, a political Analyst, from the University of Limpopo, South Africa discussed with Sputnik Africa, the unfolding fractures of the Transatlantic Alliance, as the US government pledged to impose 10% tariffs on eight European countries, who are opposing the US threats to takeover Greenland. Examining recent aggressive postures by the US, he noted that the unfolding events present opportunities for BRICS and other smaller entities to empower themselves and to set their own global agenda.
“Militarism is now replacing democracy, and it's no longer about a contestation of ideas, exchange of ideas and finding the best solutions for justice across the world, it's about militarism and the expansion of American imperialism [...] that should also tell the African Continent and other blocs in the Global South that the current global system of capitalism is actually fragile, and the US single-handedly wants to take it over because in the past the US would be alongside Britain, France, Germany as allies. But now we can see that the US is on its own [...] this presents an opportunity for countries in BRICS and other structures to think about how to respond to that new era of imperialism and to protect themselves,” the professor stated.
