Nigerian Recycling Pioneer Announces $60 Million Expansion
Phase one to build the country’s largest advanced plastic recycling facility is set for commissioning in March 2026, with full completion expected by July 2026, Polysmart Packaging announced.
The new plant will deploy world-class technology to process multiple polymer streams, specializing in high-quality, food-grade Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) resin and flakes that meet European Food Safety Authority and US FDA standards.
"We anticipate generating thousands of new direct and indirect jobs across the waste collection, sorting, technicaland operational segments of the value chain, providing dignified and sustainable livelihoods for our people,” said Wasiu Abolaji Balogun, the MD/CEO of Polysmart Packaging Limited.
Key highlights of the expansion:
🟠Largest regional capacity: The facility will process 100,000 tons of mixed plastics annually—significantly expanding Nigeria’s recycling capacity and diverting waste from landfills and waterways.
🟠Import substitution: Certified food-grade rPET will supply local food and beverage producers, reducing reliance on foreign exchange for virgin plastic imports.
🟠Waste-to-value at scale: The plant will recycle over 5.5 billion PET bottles yearly, keeping massive volumes of plastic out of drains, oceans, and dumpsites.
🟠Reduced virgin plastic demand: High-quality recycled alternatives will substantially cut Nigeria’s dependence on oil-based virgin plastics.
🟠Stronger ESG & lower emissions: The project will deliver up to 170,000 tons of annual carbon savings, conserve energy, and align with global ESG and circular-economy standards adopted by leading multinationals.
The initiative aims to solidify Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for sustainable manufacturing and green technology.
