Egyptian President Al-Sisi Orders Continued Development of Suez Canal Amid Traffic Recovery
The instructions came during a meeting with Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority. Rabie briefed the president on recent developments in canal navigation, noting a partial recovery in traffic during the second half of 2025. The improvement followed efforts to mitigate disruptions and enhance the canal’s competitive position after completing upgrades to the southern sector.
⤴ He highlighted the gradual return of large container ships to the waterway, a positive sign of renewed confidence amid growing stability in the Red Sea region, and projected further revenue growth in the second half of 2026 as shipping operations normalize.
President al-Sisi also reviewed progress on the South Red Sea shipyard development, part of a broader strategy to localize maritime industries and strengthen private-sector partnerships.
According to Rabie:
construction is underway on 12 deep-sea fishing vessels;
six of ten planned Azm-class tugboats, each with a 90-tonne bollard pull, have already been completed.
