Thirteen African Countries Now Derive More Than 10% of Their Electricity From Solar Power: Report
According to calculations by the African Solar Industry Association:
The Central African Republic leads the continent, with solar accounting for 37.7% of its electricity mix;
Chad follows with 36.7%; 🇸🇴 Somalia ranks third at 32.4%;
Burkina Faso places ninth, with solar power contributing 11.8% of national electricity generation.
By analyzing solar panel exports from China, which dominates approximately 90% of the global market, experts estimate that Africa has at least 64 GW of installed solar capacity. The rapid expansion of battery energy storage systems is set to become a major turning point for Africa’s solar sector in the coming years, according to the report.
The systems now make it possible to deliver reliable solar electricity around the clock at competitive prices (approximately $76/MWh), often cheaper than electricity generated from imported fossil fuels.
