CAF Confirms Africa Cup of Nations Will Switch to Four-Year Cycle

The Confederation of African Football could have communicated its decision more clearly but would stand by its plan to move the Africa Cup of Nations from a two- to a four-year cycle, CAF President Patrice Motsepe said, rejecting criticism that FIFA or its president, Gianni Infantino, had influenced the move.

Motsepe confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations would be held every four years starting after 2028, with an African Nations League set to be launched in 2029. He described the changes as the right decision and said they would strengthen African football in the long term.

Africa needs greater self-confidence and should not be seen as following FIFA or UEFA, Motsepe added, stressing that CAF must better explain its decisions so fans across the continent understand their benefits.

Motsepe also noted that the tournament had historically been held every two years because it once generated around 80% of CAF’s revenue but said AFCON now accounts for a much smaller share of the organization’s income.
