Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni Wins Re-Election: Electoral Commission
Museveni won the January 15 presidential election, securing nearly 72% of the vote and extending his 40-year rule, according to tallies released by Simon Byabakama, the Electoral Commission’s chairman.
Main opposition candidate Bobi Wine received about 25% of the vote.
Voter turnout was approximately 52% of the nearly 22 million registered voters. International observers characterized the voting process as generally organized and calm.
Earlier in the day, Ugandan police denied allegations that Wine was arrested, stating he remains free at his home. The announcement came after Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, had claimed he was taken by soldiers from his compound.
