South Sudan's Peace Process Remains on Track & Irreversible, Says Minister Amid Reports of Fresh Clashes

The eight-year-old peace deal is being implemented and all government bodies in the country are witnessing great stability, Donge Gai Donge, the minister of finance, planning, and investment for South Sudan's Jonglei State, told Sputnik.

Donga’s Key Points on the Situation in Jonglei:

🟠Recent tensions between the army and opposition elements are limited to only two small areas and do not threaten the overall peace process;

🟠The clashes were isolated incidents; government forces carried out tactical withdrawals to avoid civilian and military casualties;

🟠The government remains fully committed to implementing the peace agreement, despite provocations by rogue opposition elements;

🟠Although opposition leader Riek Machar is currently on trial, his political movement continues to exercise all its constitutional rights and participates fully in government institutions;

🟠Civilian evacuations in three Jonglei counties were a precautionary measure to prevent use as "human shields," following an airstrike that reportedly killed 26 civilians.

🟠The minister concluded by reiterating the national government's commitment to holding elections in 2026 and completing the security arrangements of the peace agreement.
