Ghana Removes ‘Gender Identity’ Definition From Teacher Manual for Clashing With National Values: Curriculum Council
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), together with the Ministry of Education, has withdrawn and replaced a teacher support manual after public concern over a definition of gender identity in an optional guide for physical education and health teachers, the NaCCA said.
NaCCA clarified the content was never part of the mandatory national curriculum and was removed because it “was not reflective of Ghanaian culture, norms, and values.”
The government stressed it has no intention to promote or introduce LGBTQ content at any level of education.
A revised manual based on national values and a biological understanding has been issued, and all printed copies of the old version are being recalled.
This move aligns with the Ghanaian government's broader stance on LGBTQ issues. Earlier, President John Mahama pledged to sign pending anti-LGBTQ legislation that would impose stricter penalties for same-sex relations and the promotion of LGBTQ activities.
