Morocco’s Seven-Year Drought Ends Following Heavy Winter Rains: Water Minister
Winter rainfall is 95% higher than last year and 17% above the seasonal average, raising the average dam-filling rate to 46%, with several key reservoirs now full, bringing much-needed relief to agriculture after years of water restrictions, Nizar Baraka told parliament.
According to the media, seven years of drought:
🟠drained Morocco’s dams,
🟠slashed wheat harvests,
🟠shrank the national cattle herd,
🟠triggered major farm job losses,
🟠spurred the country to fast-track desalination plans.
Morocco now aims to source 60% of its drinking water from desalinated seawater by 2030, up from 25%, reserving dam water for inland regions, Baraka earlier said.
