What’s Unfolding in Venezuela Seen as Return to US Imperialistic Tendencies: Expert

The Trump administration’s actions in Venezuela signal a rejection of the international rules-based order, Oscar van Heerden of the University of Johannesburg told Sputnik Africa.

He warned that disregarding international law sets a dangerous precedent that undermines global stability.

The African Union and the continent at large are reminding the West that abandoning these legal frameworks invites anarchy, Van Heerden noted. He emphasized that strict adherence to international principles is essential to avoid a “law of the jungle” scenario in global politics.

"I think the only way that African states are going to make an impact on international relations and sovereignty is by standing together and speaking with one voice and not being allowed to be divided."

While an emergency UN Security Council meeting was held to address the situation, Van Heerden pointed out that widespread condemnation is insufficient. He suggested that more decisive action is required to uphold international norms beyond mere rhetoric.

Finally, he explained that recent BRICS naval drills are a practical step toward this goal, testing cooperation among Global South nations from South Africa to China. These exercises aim to enhance joint operations and communication to combat piracy and the illegal plundering of marine resources.

Watch the video to hear a powerful breakdown of global hypocrisy.
