Voting for Parliamentary & Local Elections Begins in Benin: Reports
According to the media, the authorities have taken special security measures:
🟠A nationwide ban on trade and public events is in effect;
🟠Bars and other drinking establishments are closed for the duration of the vote;
🟠Security forces are on high alert;
🟠Additional army units have been deployed in the north of the country, where there is a threat from terrorist groups.
Five parties are vying for 109 seats in the National Assembly. Three of them—the Progressive Union for Renewal, the Republican Bloc, and the Movement of Elites Committed to the Emancipation of Benin—formed a pro-government coalition in the elections.
In the previous parliament, pro-government forces held a majority. Now they intend not only to maintain it but also to increase it.
Local elections will be held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections. The National Autonomous Electoral Commission has disqualified the Democrats' candidates from participating due to a lack of all necessary registration documents. As a result, only representatives of three parties are participating in the municipal elections.
