Cameroon's Post-Election Crisis Losses Necessitate Fiscal Policy Relaxation: Analyst

According to a recent report, Cameroon’s post-election crisis has cost local businesses more than $350 million. In an interview with Sputnik Africa, Armel Sango outlined the economic risks stemming from the crisis and explained how the government could respond.

The country is likely to face rising inflation, which could undermine economic growth, he warned.

"The gross national product will fall, and this will therefore have an impact both nationally and internationally."

He further emphasized that around 80% of Cameroon’s population is currently living in poverty and is therefore particularly vulnerable to the economic fallout, increasing the risk of social unrest.

"The government, therefore, has an interest in providing what are called subsidies," Sango stated.

The authorities must “redefine taxes” in order to “ease the burden on businesses and help them recover from the crisis,” he stressed.

"The question is how to reposition ourselves and embrace the dynamics of resilience," the analyst concluded.
