Mali Integrates 341 Ex-Militants Into Army as Part of National Reconciliation Process, Military Says
A ceremony in Timbuktu has officially launched disarmament, demobilization, reintegration, and integration efforts for Mali’s Timbuktu and Taoudénit regions, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) announced.
Presided over by regional governors and attended by heads of the national commission and local authorities, the event marks a significant step in the national reconciliation process, FAMa said.
🪖 The program aims to strengthen the Malian army, reduce unemployment, and curb the circulation of weapons, according to the statement.
The 341 former combatants will be integrated as second-class soldiers into the FAMa. Officials described the process as inclusive and based on Malian societal values, international humanitarian law, and human rights.
This phase in Tombouctou concludes a series of similar operations conducted across the country, according to the FAMa. Authorities have called for the full support of armed group leaders and local communities to ensure the initiative's success.
