Sudan Condemns AU-UAE Joint Statement, Questions Union's Neutrality: MFA
Khartoum questioned the AU's role in conflict resolution after the AU Commission issued a joint statement with the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday regarding the Sudanese conflict, the foreign ministry announced.
The ministry expressed "regret" over the statement, calling it surprising and unobjective. It criticized the AU for collaborating outside official forums with a non-member state—the UAE—which Sudan accuses of financing and supplying weapons to the rebel RSF militia.
This action contradicts the principle of "African solutions to African problems" and undermines the AU's own endorsed peace initiative, the ministry stated.
This initiative, presented by Sudanese PM Kamil Idris to the UN Security Council in late December, calls for RSF disarmament and withdrawal from cities before political dialogue. Khartoum maintains it will only engage with initiatives that do not equate the government with the rebels.
