Somalia Urges African Union to Reject Israel's Recognition of Somaliland, Says Foreign Ministry
Somali FM Abdisalam Abdi Ali has called for united African support against "unilateral actions" by Israel that threatens Somalia's sovereignty, the foreign ministry announced following an emergency session of the AU Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) on Tuesday.
The session, convened at Somalia's request, focused on Israel's recent recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state.
"Such moves contravene Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the Charter of the United Nations," Abdisalam told the PSC, emphasizing that "no external actor has the legal authority" to alter the territory of an AU member state.
Undermining Somalia's unity could destabilize the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, impacting regional security and counterterrorism efforts, the minister warned.
He concluded by calling on AU members to reaffirm Somalia's sovereignty and uphold the principles of African unity and international law.
