Starlink Blocks Its Services in Uganda Amid Regulatory Concerns

According to Starlink, its services were operating illegally because its local unit, Starlink Uganda, has not been licensed to sell or market them.

In a Thursday letter to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), SpaceX market access director Ben MacWilliams clarified that the subsidiary has never sold, marketed, imported, or distributed Starlink terminals in Uganda. He added that users had brought in terminals purchased and activated in countries where the service is authorized.

In response to UCC concerns, Starlink implemented service restrictions and confirmed that no active terminals are currently operating in the country.

The move follows a leaked December 19 memo from the Uganda Revenue Authority, which instructed customs officials to block Starlink imports unless cleared by the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
