‘Not Industry Hype’: Wine Expert on Africa’s Growing Place in Global Production
Sputnik Africa
Global wine production is at a point of reassessment, as shifting harvest patterns spark wider conversations about quality, geography, and long-term balance. Beyond volumes and statistics, attention is turning to how wine regions adapt, earn recognition, and position themselves within an industry shaped by climate, craft, and consumer trust.
As attention turns to fluctuations in output from established producers, the conversation has widened to include regions that were previously overlooked or underestimated. Africa’s wine industry, particularly in the south of the continent, is now part of this broader reflection, not as a sudden alternative, but as a maturing contributor shaped by experience, innovation, and changing global tastes.Speaking on these developments, South Africa–based wine professional, Caroline Ngwenya, explained that current shifts should not be read as abrupt changes in global wine geography. She emphasized that recognition for African wines has been built gradually, driven by consistent quality, greater exposure, and increasing engagement from critics and consumers who are encountering these wines on their own terms. To find out more, tune in to the Global South Pole podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, Overcast, and Mave Stream.► Check out all the episodes of Global South Pole

Africa’s wine industry, particularly in the south of the continent, is now part of this broader reflection, not as a sudden alternative, but as a maturing contributor shaped by experience, innovation, and changing global tastes.
Speaking on these developments, South Africa–based wine professional, Caroline Ngwenya, explained that current shifts should not be read as abrupt changes in global wine geography. She emphasized that recognition for African wines has been built gradually, driven by consistent quality, greater exposure, and increasing engagement from critics and consumers who are encountering these wines on their own terms.
“So that is changing the view and the narrative around African wines, wines on this side of the world. And finally, these wines are getting the recognition that they deserve. As a future projection, I would say that the shift is generally coming to Africa because people are now saying, 'Oh, we didn't know that the wines from South Africa are actually this good,' due to the narrative that had been created about them overseas,” Ngwenya narrated.
