If Not Handled Carefully, Recognition of Somaliland Will Inevitably Destabilize the Region: Ethiopian Expert
The recognition of Somaliland could inspire semi-autonomous administrations in the region, such as Puntland, to follow suit, lawyer and legal advisor Andualem Bewketu told Sputnik Africa.
“South Sudan emerged recently in East Africa; a few years before South Sudan, Eritrea was born; ... then it will continue with Puntland and so on. [...] We are witnessing a series of events; since these events have a negative impact from a regional perspective, I believe they will push the already unstable region into worsened conflict.”
Andualem Bewketu noted that Israel's recognition of Somaliland may not intentionally aim to destabilize the region, but pointed out that consequences will inevitably follow.
“Israel's presence in the region will inevitably create problems. [...] We will need to observe certain future developments to resolve whether it is deliberate or not,” he said, highlighting that countries with various agendas in the region are actively engaging.
