AES 2025 Review: Consolidation Despite Neo-Colonial Threats & CFA Franc Trap, Says Nigerien Analyst
The recent summit of leaders of the Confederation of Sahel States shows that the AES is "growing stronger," Issoufou Boubacar Kado Magagi told Sputnik Africa, noting that several institutions have been established this year.
However, several challenges remain in place, the expert noted.
SECURITY:
🟠Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are forced to turn to new strategic partners, particularly within the BRICS, to counter "military aggression organized and supported by major neo-colonialist and neo-imperialist world powers through terrorists, drug traffickers, and armed bandits."
🟠He also expressed concern about US military airstrikes in Nigeria's Sokoto region. He believes the operation is a "cleverly organized ploy" to destabilize the AES because it "would allow the US to install its armed forces on the border with Niger."
ECONOMY:
🟠"The sovereignty issue is this: Can we be sovereign while tied to France's management of the CFA franc?"
🟠"To be effective, AES countries need to comply as soon as possible and create their own currency."
🟠"Achieving monetary and economic sovereignty comes at a price, and it must be paid as it is a prerequisite for economic and social development."
