Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland Could Turn Israel–Houthi Conflict Into One in Horn of Africa: Ethiopian Expert
Israel's decision is centered on its own interests and disturbs the region's peace, lawyer and legal advisor Andualem Bewketu told Sputnik Africa.
He said that gaining a new front for confrontation with the Houthi militants is one of Israel’s primary objectives.
"... The Houthi rebels have launched some attacks towards Israel; they are controlling the area in a destabilizing manner. ... Now, the assumption given is that Israel will have a direct naval base. Therefore, not only from the sea but also from land, building a military base and shooting at the Houthis from Somaliland is easy," he said, estimating Israel's rationale.
At the same time, Israel’s actions are directly linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East.
"... In response, if Israel asks to resettle Gaza displacees in Somaliland, Somaliland will easily say yes. The reason is that in many ways, the recognition Somaliland has now received is a gift that can't be found anywhere."
As Middle Eastern countries with interests in the region become increasingly involved, the area will inevitably descend into “unprecedented chaos,” Andualem explained.
