Somalia Opposes Using Its Territory for Forced Population Transfers or Foreign Bases, Says MFA
The East African country firmly rejects Israel's "unlawful" recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar.
"The Federal Government of Somalia categorically rejects the decision [...] No external actor has the legal authority to alter Somalia's territorial status," Omar noted during a briefing in Mogadishu for members of the international diplomatic community.
Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia's sovereign territory, a status protected by the Somali Provisional Constitution, the UN Charter, and the African Union's Constitutive Act, he reiterated.
Such recognition undermines international law, disrupts Somalia's state-building efforts, and risks fueling instability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region by potentially creating opportunities for extremist groups, the minister warned.
Concluding his remarks, the Minister reaffirmed Somalia's support for Palestinian rights and stated the country would pursue all diplomatic and legal measures to defend its internationally recognized borders.
