Sheldrick Wildlife Trust carried out an emergency rescue after a young elephant calf fell into a water trough and became trapped. The situation quickly escalated as the calf’s mother grew increasingly agitated, raising concerns that prolonged stress could lead to abandonment.
Rescue teams moved in using their vehicle as a barrier to protect the calf while extracting him from the trough. During the operation, the mother charged and struck the vehicle as the team worked to free the calf, who weighed approximately 200 pounds. After several attempts, the calf was successfully lifted out.
The mother returned immediately after the rescue, assessed her calf, and led him back into the surrounding wilderness. The rescue and reunion were made possible through ongoing support for Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s conservation efforts.
