African Union Denounces Actions Aimed at Recognizing Somaliland: Chairperson
"Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Any attempt to undermine the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia runs counter to the fundamental principles of the African Union and risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent," the AU said in a statement.
Earlier on Friday, Israel became the first country to officially recognize the Republic of Somaliland in the Horn of Africa as an independent state.
Egypt, Turkey, Somalia, and Djibouti's foreign ministers held a joint call, deeming the move "completely unacceptable" and reaffirming full support for Somalia's unity.
Separately, Iraq's Foreign Ministry, as current chairman of the League of Arab States, condemned the recognition as a violation of sovereignty and international law, urging the international community to act firmly against such "unlawful actions."
The office of Prime Minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre said on Friday that Somalia categorically rejects the infringement on its sovereignty and the illegal actions of Israel, which recognized the Republic of Somaliland.
