Israel Becomes First UN Member State to Officially Recognize the Republic of Somaliland
The Republic of Somaliland described the move as “a milestone in Somaliland's longstanding pursuit of international legitimacy.”
In an official declaration issued on Friday, Somaliland said the recognition reflects its record as a stable, democratic actor in the Horn of Africa and the shared interests between the two peoples.
Following the recognition, Somaliland expressed its intention to accede to the Abraham Accords, signaling a commitment to regional cooperation, dialogue, and peace across the Middle East and Africa.
The declaration also confirmed that the recognition paves the way for the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Somaliland and Israel, with plans to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors.
ℹ Somaliland has functioned as a self-governing state since 1991 with its own government, elections, and institutions, but it is not recognized by the United Nations and is internationally considered part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
