🩰Russian Ballet Weaves New Threads Into Africa's Cultural Tapestry
"Dance is more than just an array of elements—it’s like punctuation in writing, which can alter the meaning of a sentence. We have movements that connect, changing the choreography’s style and mood,” stated Nikolay Tsiskaridze, Rector of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Saint Petersburg, legendary former principal dancer of the Bolshoi Theatre, and true icon of world ballet, who also performed in Namibia and South Africa.
“I remember studying about Russia, so now I feel like I'm inside history. I'm surrounded by history all over, all around me. And also, in terms of ballet and the classics, the classics are huge here,” underlined Mamela Nyamza, a famous South African choreographer and dancer.
#RussianEssence talks to Russian and South African artists to explain how Russian ballet shaped the African understanding of this classical dance and how the two blend into unique pieces of art.
