KwaZulu-Natal Lawmakers Behind Recent Chamber Chaos Suspended, Official Says

The recent disruptions are "a fundamental and unacceptable attack on the parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, and the authority of the Presiding Officer," stated the Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce.

The suspension affected 35 uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) members and one Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member and will result in a five-day loss of remuneration from January 12 to 17, 2026, in accordance with standing rules, Boyce noted.

Earlier in December, opposition MKP lawmakers, holding 37 of 80 seats, stormed toward the speaker and threw objects after a secret ballot was rejected in the no-confidence vote against KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli.

“During the sitting in question, we experienced a disruption that was targeted at ensuring that the sitting does not proceed with its business,” Boyce told a local broadcaster.

The MKP reportedly criticized the sanctions as "legally not sound, procedurally flawed, and politically reckless" while considering legal and parliamentary options.
