The capital of Ghana was teeming with crowds of people engaged in last-minute holiday shopping for the Christmas season, according to local media.

The alarming incident triggered panic as numerous individuals suddenly struggled to breathe.

Ghana National Fire Service teams arrived quickly at the scene to evaluate the situation and provide assistance.

Preliminary reports suggest the cause may have been a suspected chemical leak or a concentrated plume of fumes from an unknown source. However, authorities also noted that the bad smell emanating from debris recently cleared from gutters during a cleanup exercise might have contributed to the situation.

The number of casualties remains unconfirmed at this time, and the government is currently working to determine the exact cause of the incident.
