DRC Lifts 10-Month Cobalt Export Halt, Resumes Global Shipments: Minister
Due to a halt in exports from the DRC, which supplies more than 70% of this resource to the global market, "the price of cobalt has risen from $22,000 per tonne to $54,000 or $55,000," Finance Minister Doudou Fwamba told reporters.
The DRC leads global cobalt production—a key metal for premium batteries in smartphones and electric vehicles.
The decision to stop exports was initially aimed at stabilizing the market and ensuring "national sovereignty over raw materials," the minister noted, stressing that the DRC previously lost fiscal revenue due to the systematic decline in prices.
