Protectionism Will Modernize Rice Farming in Cameroon, Says Economist
Cameroonian rice faces competition from imported products, but the government has "taken the bull by the horns," economist Guy Arsène Nyangoe told Sputnik Africa.
Nyangoe’s remarks follow the authorities’ decision to allocate 9 billion CFA francs (approximately $16 million) to the Society for the Expansion and Modernization of Local Rice Cultivation.
"The country is modernizing the sector through the implementation of import-substitution, which means replacing imports via the development of local production," he stated.
According to Nyangoe, the government can rely on several levers:
🟠Subsidies to reduce the cost of inputs;
🟠Providing agricultural equipment;
🟠Supporting farmer networking.
The country, which aims to triple its rice production, should prioritize domestic consumption over imports, the economist added.
