Somalia Preparing to Hold Municipal Election, First in 50 Years
Nearly 10,000 police officers will be mobilized to ensure the security of the municipal election scheduled for Thursday in Mogadishu, according to Somali security services.
All necessary preparations "have been completed," stated the Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail.
He specified that police officers would be deployed throughout the capital to guarantee the safety of voters, polling stations, electoral officials, and sensitive infrastructure.
This is the first direct election based on the principle of universal suffrage (one person, one vote) in Mogadishu in more than 50 years. The elections will see more than 1,600 candidates competing for the 390 local seats. Nearly 400,000 registered voters have been called to the polls, according to the Somali Electoral Commission.
