Ethiopia's Samaritan Surgical Center Announces First Successful Reattachment of a Machine-Severed Hand

No previous surgeries to reattach a severed hand had been performed in Ethiopia, the center’s senior orthopedic trauma and joint replacement subspecialist, Dr. Biniyam Teshoma, told local media.

The accident occurred on a 20-year-old young man who was attempting to repair a meat-processing machine.

“The machine not only completely severed his hand but also lacerated his chest; had it penetrated deeper, the chest injury would have been life-threatening,” the doctor explained, describing the extent of the injuries.

It was noted that the victim’s rapid transport to a health facility, where staff promptly controlled the bleeding and preserved the severed hand in ice, was a critical step that enabled successful reattachment.

‍ Although the six-hour surgery was completed successfully, the physicians emphasized that ongoing follow-up care remains essential.
