Nigeria Files Complaint With FIFA Asking for Changes to World Cup Qualifiers
The Nigerian Football Federation raised concerns over the DRC national team, which included six to nine Europe-born players who changed their citizenship to play for the team. Several of these players were ineligible, the Nigerian Football Federation stated, arguing they did not obtain the proper permission to switch nationality.
Some players may not have formally renounced their European passports in line with DRC law before representing the country, fueling the Nigerian federation’s objections, local media reported.
On November 16, in the final of the continental qualifying playoffs for the World Cup, Nigeria lost to the DRC in a penalty shootout. The victory allowed the Congolese to advance to the intercontinental playoffs, which will determine the final participants in the World Cup finals.
