Former Senior Adviser to Djibouti Leader Officially Confirms Presidential Candidacy for 2026 Vote

"With respect, clear-sightedness, and with a profound sense of responsibility, I hereby announce my decision to run in the presidential election scheduled for April 2026," President Ismail Omar Guelleh's ex-international spokesman, Alexis Mohamed, announced.

Mohamed, who left the country after resigning from his advisory role in September, emphasized his campaign "must and will be done from Djibouti itself," contingent upon the government providing security guarantees and lifting restrictions on his political activities.

The former insider called for a free and fair electoral process. His key demands include the effective presence of independent international observers and full transparency regarding campaign financing for all candidates, including President Guelleh.

Mohamed directly challenged the incumbent, who has ruled since 1999, to publicly renounce any foreign nationalities. This call comes after constitutional amendments removed presidential age limits, allowing Guelleh to seek a sixth term.

Mohamed's platform centers on social justice, fighting corruption, and restoring constitutional order, according to his statement. The government has yet to comment on his announcement.
