Djibouti's April 2026 Elections: Former Adviser to Run Against Incumbent President

Alexis Mohamed, a former international spokesman and advisor to President Ismail Omar Guelleh, intends to run in the upcoming presidential race, French media reported, citing a statement by Mohamed.

Mohamed resigned from his advisory role in September, citing concerns over "democratic backsliding" and what he described as a move towards a "presidency for life" in the strategically located Horn of Africa nation.

President Guelleh, 77, has ruled Djibouti since 1999 and recently had a constitutional age limit removed, enabling him to seek a sixth term.

Mohamed, who served Guelleh for a decade, called for guarantees of a free and fair vote, emphasizing the need for the safety of all candidates, according to the report.

In the 2021 presidential election, President Guelleh secured over 97% of the vote.

On Monday, Mohamed posted on his social media account that he would announce his decision on the upcoming elections in a public statement on Tuesday.
