DR Congo Reportedly Seeks Military Help From Chad, Angola as M23 Rebels Advance
The Democratic Republic of Congo needs Chad's military support to protect Tshopo province and its capital, Kisangani, located north of areas held by the M23 rebel group, local media reported.
This request reportedly follows earlier unsuccessful attempts by President Félix Tshisekedi to secure Chadian support in February.
Furthermore, during his recent visit to Luanda, Tshisekedi asked Angolan President João Lourenço for military assistance to protect the provinces of Haut-Katanga and Lualaba, which border Angola, reports said.
The urgent request comes as M23 rebels continue to gain territory. After capturing the strategic city of Uvira in South Kivu province on December 10, rebel forces have moved south, taking control of the town of Makobola.
The advance now threatens the city of Mboko and, according to regional intelligence, appears strategically aimed toward Kalemie, considered the gateway to the resource-rich Katanga region.
