US Move to Exclude South Africa From G20 'Unilateralist' Attempt to Divide Group: Professor

While the AU should maintain its seat to advance continental interests, it must formally object to South Africa's exclusion, Dr. Oscar van Heerden of the University of Johannesburg told Sputnik Africa.

"I do think that BRICS countries are going to start also wanting to raise objections and problems," Dr. Heerden said.

The analyst warned that the Trump administration's move to exclude South Africa from upcoming G20 meetings sets a dangerous precedent.

"The other reason why I think they are going to address it in a big way is because it speaks directly to the issue of multilateralism," he concluded. "If you can exclude South Africa today, then you can exclude me tomorrow."
