Solar Energy: Cameroon Must Also 'Work Upstream,' Says Economist
Eugène Nyambal welcomed the €55.47 million ($65.12 million) investment unlocked with the African Export-Import Bank to electrify rural areas in Cameroon but called for a genuine national strategy.
"Cameroon has several energy sources: hydro, solar, etc. We need a study to determine the best combination and how to deploy them across the territory, knowing that the northern part of the country is Sahelian and has great potential for solar," he told Sputnik Africa.
While foreign funding can help, structural issues must also be addressed, the expert noted.
"We must try to fix the deficiencies observed in electricity production, transmission, and distribution," Nyambal said.
In December, a decree authorized a credit line with Afreximbank to electrify 200 localities using solar power.
