Ethiopia Signs Deal to Host Gas‑by‑Rail Economic Corridor Project
The facility aims to produce up to 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen and green steel annually by 2030.
“It aligns perfectly with our grand green development and economic growth efforts. There are also initiatives to make it reliable and connect it with railway lines from neighboring countries,” State Minister for the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Bareo Hassen told Sputnik Africa.
If fully carried out, the project aims to cut firewood use—responsible for deforestation, indoor air pollution, and emissions—by up to 75%.
For Ethiopia, the project goes beyond gas transport, as the country will also host the Ethio‑Cluster industrial hub. Additionally, it is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the African Continental Free Trade Area initiative.
The project also carries other significant implications, promising:
🟠clean energy;
🟠job creation;
🟠and broad modernization.
Its success, however, will depend on strong coordination, substantial investment, and firm political will.
