Morocco Plans New Port on Mediterranean and Atlantic: Minister

Nador West Med, located on the Mediterranean, will provide 800 hectares for industrial development, with expansion plans reaching 5,000 hectares, Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka was quoted by a Western news outlet as saying.

The port is expected to become functional in the second half of 2026, Baraka noted.

Nador West Med will feature an LNG terminal—Morocco's first floating storage and regasification unit—connected via pipeline to industrial centers in the northwest.

The second project in the disputed Western Sahara region—the $1 billion Dakhla port on the Atlantic—will include 1,600 hectares designated for industrial development and an additional 5,200 hectares of farmland irrigated with desalinated water.

"The port will be ready in 2028 and will be Morocco's deepest at 23 meters," the minister added.

Both the ports of Nador and Dakhla will feature docks specifically designated for exporting green hydrogen once production starts, he stressed.

Morocco, Baraka added, is also considering developing a port in Tan-Tan on the Atlantic coast in partnership with green hydrogen investors.
